Pendleton Blankets

A pioneer in natural wool fibers the Pendleton brand is loved by many in the tribal nation. Staying true to nature and a commitment to quality many people have turned to Pendleton Wool to stay warm this winter. Some blankets were woven or twisted from thin strips of cedar bark fiber, bird, beaver or rabbit skins. Some loomed from wild cotton colored with native dyes. From Europe came wool and still more colors for the native artists' expressions. Then came the owners from Pendleton  ® Woolen Mills in Oregon who studied the beliefs and legends behind the Indian designs, striving to capture their true spirit in blankets produced with modern machinery.

The Iroquois Turtle Robe is a re-coloration of an early 1900s Pendleton® design. It pays tribute to the Iroquois Confederacy, one of the oldest participatory democracies on earth, consisting of the Oneida, Seneca, Mohawk, Cayuga, Onondaga (and later the Tuscarora) Nations. The Turtle design was inspired by Iroquois, primarily Mohawk, legend. Long ago, the earth was covered with deep water and there were no people. According to stories, the birds saw Skywoman fall from the sky. As she fell, she grabbed the roots of a tree from heaven. The birds spread their wings together to save her. Only the Turtle was strong enough to hold her, so they placed her on the turtle's back. There she planted the root; and as her garden grew, Turtle grew in size first becoming a large island, then finally North America, known as Turtle Island. This blanket is an example of centerpoint design in which three major design elements fall in a row down the center of the blanket.

This girl's baby blanket was inspired by a Plains Indian tradition. New parents place their child's remaining navel cord inside an amulet shaped like a turtle or a sand lizard. The amulets imitate the turtle's hard shell an the sand lizard's quick movements that will guard the spirit of the child and ensure a long, protected life. A portion of the sale of each blanket will go to supporting the American Indian College Fund.
