For Chris, a seasoned member of Oregon’s Dust Busters wildland firefighting team, firefighting is more than a career — it’s a calling that stretches back over two decades. Since 2003, he’s been on the fireline, leading hand crews through some of the toughest conditions and shaping the next generation of wildland firefighters.

When asked why he keeps doing this work after so many years, Chris doesn’t hesitate: it’s about impact.
“Making a difference through fire suppression activities but also having an impact on people’s lives. All the new firefighters that get to experience life on a hand crew are forever changed and become more resilient people.”
For Chris, fire suppression is only part of the job. The other part is mentorship — guiding rookies through their first seasons, watching them grow stronger, tougher, and more resilient than when they started.
On the line, there’s no piece of gear more important than boots.
“Your feet are your lifeline on a fire assignment,” Chris says. “The right boots for you and your position make all the difference.”
From first-year rookies testing whether wildfire is the right fit for them to experienced crew bosses managing entire operations, Chris believes boots should match both the role and the individual.
Chris has worn Drew’s boots across his career and speaks highly of them. “From the loggers to the fire-rated hiker style boots, I’ve never had an issue.” That kind of dependability is critical when the work environment is unforgiving and every step counts.
Chris sums it up simply: every firefighter should find the right boots for their situation. Just as no two assignments are the same, no two firefighters have the same needs. For rookies, lighter styles may help them adjust to the physical demands. For veteran crew bosses, sturdier loggers or packers may be the answer.
What doesn’t change is the need for boots that can keep pace with the job. For Chris and the Dust Busters, that’s meant trusting Drew’s.
